Speckled Dinner Plate

Cheung Sha Wan · High fire

Clay that rings when you tap it.

Kilnvale is a short firing of everyday stoneware — plates, bowls, a jug — thrown in small lots. Speckle is iron in the body, not a decal. A dinner plate is seventy-eight dollars because it went through a kiln that actually got hot.

How we fire

The yard

Not a printed pattern. A firing.

  1. Throw and trim. Each plate is centred, pulled, and footed in the Cheung Sha Wan workshop. The rim is left soft so a knife does not chip it in a month.
  2. High fire. The body is taken hot enough to ring. That is why a Kilnvale plate is denser, heavier in the hand, and priced as studio ware — not a supermarket stack.
  3. Speckle stays. Iron in the clay blooms through the satin glaze. No two plates match exactly. That is the lot, and we write it on the terms.
